U.K. Theatergoers Cover Up Again, After Months Without Masks

The New York Times: Since England’s theaters reopened without restrictions in July, one thing has been as notable as the action onstage: the lack of masks in the audience. Unlike in Broadway theaters, patrons here have not been required to wear face coverings, and many attendees have chosen to ignore preshow announcements encouraging them to mask up.

I thought that it was mainly Americans that were having issues with wanting to wear masks. I have deeply respected most big theaters in America requiring masks and documentation of a covid vaccine. It is surprising to me that many theatre goes don’t fully understand the statement they are making when not wearing a mask to a production. We know how much Covid shutdowns hurt the theatre and all live entertainment industries. Individuals not willing to do their part while participating in a live production, I think, are being disrespectful to those that went without work for over a year. I am glad that these business are taking things into their own hands, otherwise, who knows we may not have live theatre again a few weeks or months from now. This entire situation is just silly to me. It’s just plain rude and ignorant. It’s hard for me to believe that there are people that would cancel their tickets to a show on West End because they didn’t want to wear a mask.
