Costume Design: What Goes Into Telling a Character's Story?

I don't think this article tells us much of anything we don't already know about the design process, but it's nice to reflect on some patterns in costumes design and why those strategies continue to work. Using red for passion or black for evil is hardly novel, but people still make those choices. I'm sure the discussions in costume design courses are more nuanced, though. I also believe that an "iconic" look doesn't necessarily equate an incredible or even well-designed look. But then again, there's also a reason they are iconic, and some fans tend to get mad when the original look isn't emulated in a sequel (i.e. superheroes). One part of this article I think is super cool to think about is the notion of first impressions. The first outfit can really set the tone for the production. People tend to draw a lot of conclusions on what they see first. I wonder how this changes with the use of trailers or photos.
