The Disney+ movie of ‘Hamilton’ prompts a comparison of stage versus screen

DC Metro Theater Arts: With the official announcement from The Broadway League earlier this week that all Broadway performances are now suspended through January 3, 2021 (at the earliest), theater-makers and theater-lovers are faced with the very real issue of finding satisfying alternative modes of presentation and viewing for more than just the short term. Added to that is the fact that surveys have consistently shown that audiences would be hesitant to return to the theater even after the green light is given for reopening, until they feel that it is completely safe to do so – presumably after an effective vaccine and/or treatment for COVID-19 has been developed.

This article brings up the great point that although seeing a recorded performance is not the same as seeing one live, it is considerably cheaper and much more accessible, and gives many more people the opportunity to watch musical theatre than a typical orchestra seat that could run you upwards of $300. “In addition, because the live-capture filming was done over three different performance dates, it could then be mixed and edited to give not just the best variety of viewing angles, but also the strongest deliveries of the cast’s acting, dancing, and singing” This also brings up the valid point that Disney+ is offering viewers the absolute best experience possible on a filmed platform. This enables viewers to not only discover and explore more musical theatre, but to rewatch and notice things they didn't see before for a much cheaper and more accessible cost (or, no cost at all.) I hope that more productions upload pro-shots so more people will fall in love with musical theatre.
