VR Immersive Theater in The Under Presents: Tempest!
Tested: We review The Under Presents: Tempest, a new interactive theater experience for Oculus Quest and Rift that pairs real actors with small groups of participants for a VR reimagning of Shakespeare's The Tempest. We chat with Tender Claws founder Samantha Gorman about the creation of this 45-minute multiplayer theatrical story and discuss the challenges and opportunities VR brings to stage performance.

This is SO sick. First of all, the art style of the game is the most intriguing thing for me. The cell shading and clean geometric style is absolutely beautiful - my favorite games almost always resemble this style. The concept of theatre in VR is fascinating because it takes the advantages of theatre and the advantages of animation and combines them. Theatre is uniquely live, but it is bounded by what is possible to recreate in real life in real time. Animation is uniquely limitless, but cannot be experienced interactively. But by taking the excitement and immersiveness of live performances and placing it in a visual world with no boundaries, some incredible personal experiences can be created. The visuals within the world of the Tempest are stunning, and probably awesome to experience up close. And in addition, there being no barrier between the performer and the audience creates an even more intimate experience, and it’s so interesting to see the way humans connect, even wordlessly over 40 minutes. I would absolutely experience this given the opportunity.
