The Mary Sue: In the wake of Shane Black casting a sexual offender in The Predator, and Olivia Munn speaking out about the issue, the majority of The Predator‘s male cast has been avoiding interacting and doing interviews with Munn. Black has not contacted her, and today most of the cast skipped out on a group interview with her at TIFF.

This article describes people’s reactions to Olivia Munn’s demand to remove a sex offender from her new movie. While I was disturbed by the lack of support from her cast, I was not completely surprised. Despite the revolutionary amount of action taken during the Me Too movement, there is sadly still a lot of work that needs to be done. Despite not being surprised by the reaction to Munn’s actions, I still am shocked by it. I can’t really wrap my head around someone not being able to support what she did because it just feels like common sense to me. I am honestly surprised that it the casting decision was approved and also that it was allowed to move forward and it was only after the scene was filmed that anything was done about it. While I am grateful that the scene was deleted as quickly as it was, I still would have preferred to have never heard about this and for Striegel to have never been cast.
The fact that this is the first time I’ve heard about this story is worrisome. This is a very serious issue, but I haven’t seen anyone talking about it yet. It makes me worry that perhaps we’re reaching a point where the general population has forgotten about it as things calm down. With every major social movement lately we get bored of it once things presumably calm down again. Situations like this are the reason that shouldn’t happen. If Munn were receiving more support and acknowledgment from everyone the news would be breaking on larger platforms, and perhaps the story would receive more repercussions for the director involved. When we decide that something isn’t our problem anymore, we are becoming a part of the problem, whether we mean to or not. Even if all of these actors only have good intentions, their lack of communication makes them appear to be on the wrong side, isolating the victim. This is a huge part of rape culture, and it’s why so many sexual assaults go unreported. I hope that people like Olivia Munn keep speaking out against it, and calling people out on their bs, because if we don’t hold ourselves and our peers accountable then things will stagnate, and these people won’t ever get the justice they deserve.
