An Experimental Puppet Show Teaches the Key to Communication

The Creators Project: Plenty of talk gets flung around the world of The Creatures of Yes, but is anyone really listening? In the premiere of the newest episode of Jacob Graham’s experimental, retro-inspired puppet show, premiering today on The Creators Project, the Creatures have all sorts of conversations with one another. “The idea behind the video,” says Graham, “is about people who are talking to one another but not really communicating. One person says something and then the other person says ‘Oh, that’s nice,’ and then says something completely different.”

I really commend what this show's team is doing. I think it's extremely beneficial to teach kids about communication from an early age. I've worked at a kids' summer camp and the difference in communication abilities between a three year old and a five year old is astounding. And a lot of times when kids get angry or upset, it's because they're not able to properly express themselves or not able to properly understand what others are expressing to them. Shows like this could show kids at a young age the importance of understanding others and how to be understood, which can help develop healthier relationships with their parents, teachers, friends, etc. They're a lot like Sesame Street in the way they're trying to teach kids in ways that are engaging. I really think lessons in communication for young kids could help them grow up to be more thoughtful, empathetic, and more at piece in their relationships.

This puppet show is a really fantastic way to teach and show kids the best way to communicate with the people that surround them everyday. By teaching kids different communication methods, or even to communicate at all from such an early age is a skill that children will use both in school and throughout their future careers, possibly making communication the most important tool for anyone in our society to know how to use. Using cartoon-like television programs (or Youtube), is another very obvious and good way to get children interested in learning of any kind, and that is why PBS has done so well not only in their kids' shows businesses but also in educating the many kids that watch their shows. When working in theatre, if you do not know how to communicate or collaborate with the people you are working with, you will not get anywhere in actually producing the show, or anywhere in your career. This goes for so many other jobs, so starting communication lessons at a young age is a really good idea.
