Musical ‘Mamma Mia!’ Is Going To Be A Restaurant Because Even Former ABBA Members Need Hobbies

Consumerist: It could get kinda boring, retiring from your day job and trying to figure out how to fill the minutes, hours and days that stretch emptily before you. Especially after touring the globe as part of a Swedish supergroup and performing for hordes of rabid fans. Perhaps that’s why one former ABBA member has decided to open up a restaurant based on the band’s song and the musical it gave birth to, Mamma Mia!. Because hey, ABBA fans really like ABBA, so why not?

Wow! I knew that Mamma Mia had a following, but I had no idea what that following was capable of. I’ll be interested to see if the restaurant succeeds greatly or flops. And to be honest, I don’t think either option is that unreasonable. Mamma Mia ran for numerous years on Broadway selling out night after night so it would not be that far out of the picture for the restaurant to do just as well. Contrasting that however, there’s a chance that people might be ABBA’d out. Additionally, ABBA’s fan base is getting older so the demographic may not be as active and dedicated to the culture of ABBA as much as they used to be. Something else I think is interesting is that the owner chose a restaurant, rather some other type of entertainment/ leisure event. Restaurants are often not particularly profitable but I just like the other uninvolved members of ABBA wish them the best of luck.

I really agree with the tone of this article in that it mocking the theme of the restaurant and the person who’s opening it, I mean really thought if you’ve made that much money and retired why invest in a poor business idea? In that same vein though if you have the money and nothing to do then why not open up a terrible business. While we’re all sad to hear the mamma mia is moving off Broadway, I think it’s time to let it go, its audience wouldn’t be too happy with a restaurant and why only partially sate people? The only thing I’m really ok with is that it’s a former ABBA member making the music because they probably have a fairly decent understanding of the music. I’m not entirely certain what dancing in the isles is but if they managed to get investors then good for them.
