Now I don’t know too much about the 3d printing industry, but it does make me think that the policy shift for MakerBot isn’t exactly one I can rest easy with. The whole point of the start up was to create open source printers, expanding the community of people interested in fabrication and prototyping beyond just the people at the top who are paid to. There’s an awesome spirit that anyone who has taken the time to try create something new knows about, and MakerBot was part of the rise in popularity of 3D printing that was accompanied by that spirit. I’m a little worried that that spirit might be lost with the policy changes that Stratasys is implementing. The company should keep in mind that their target consumer is still the so called ‘prosumer’, a market of intelligent people who have genuine interest and passion into making cool and useful things.
