I could get lost in that store for hours and not get bored -- old, creepy, quack medical supplies are some of my favorite things to look for and look at in flea markets. There's something fascinating about what people thought the 'future of medicine' looked like in the past. I always think of the novel '1984' by George Orwell or the movie 'Back to the Future' when I think about these contraptions and how we, as the supposed future, should be in retrospect to the imaginations of the artists who created the movies and books about our time. Doing props on a movie must be an invigorating yet extremely exhausting task, especially if you're a shopper. I mean, don't get me wrong, I adore shopping, but spending hours in the blazing Santa Monica sun running all over the place looking for a specific type of medical equipment does not seem like an extremely fun day to me. But I think I'd still do it if given the chance, because finding that one piece of property that lets the lightbulb go off in your head is more rewarding than any struggle.
We’ve all seen horror and syfy movies. They’ve always had that little bit of intrigue in them that most films don’t. Especially if you look back in time, and not where we are in the current present with the film industry. Seeing the various creations of what was construed to be a mad scientist’s lab, and the different props that were used to make that scenario possible. There is nothing quite like watching old movies and looking at the different props, some of which look a little cheesy to us just because of how much time and technology has changed since those days of old. Sometimes what was good then is still good now. Who doesn’t like being able reminisce on the good old days, even something as small as an old toy and the memories it brought, the same goes for an old prop in a film, it wouldn’t have been the same without it.
Wow this is a really cool and interesting prop shop. Props are a great department because literally anything in everyday life can be a prop in a show. There are so many crazy shows out there that anything is possible. It is very cool that they created a prop shop specifically dedicated to old and weird scientific machines. There are many shows like Frankenstein that need weird machines like the ones in this shop. There are probably not a lot of places that specialize in these types of props, so they probably have a very good business. Props are often fake and created to look like the object you need. I love it when they are actually authentic pieces that were functioning at one point. All of their props were once used and worked. I would love to visit this prop shop and check out these items for myself one day.
