Variety: The musical version of “Groundhog Day” as well as starring stage turns for Ralph Fiennes (in Henrik Ibsen’s “Master Builder”) and Timothy Spall (in Harold Pinter’s “The Caretaker”) are among the shows on tap for artistic director Matthew Warchus’s inaugural season at the Old Vic in London.
The programming selection of the Tony-winning director (“God of Carnage”) marks an immediate departure from his predecessor, Kevin Spacey, who relied on star turns and big-name plays to bring the Old Vic back from the brink of closure. Instead, Warchus is promising an altogether more diverse program, harking back to the theater’s origins as a variety hall.

I am a big fan of the direction Matthew Warchus is taking with the Old Vic, not least of all because I'm a passionate fan of "Groundhog Day". But, looking at the whole host of works Warchus plans to introduce to the theatre, it seems that he is taking the Old Vic in a direction other theaters would do well to emulate. Even with the Old Vic being a hazardously under-funded company, Warchus wants to continually be introducing new plays by new playwrights to the future seasons, something missing from a lot of the American theatre scene. Interesting to see Kevin Spacey leaving the Old Vic, as that was how I first knew about the theatre. I found it interesting how the article notes the method Spacey used to attract audience members, using star-led big-name shows, which was necessary to save the dying theatre. I'll be excited to see how the Old Vic can now become something more of an individual institution.
