Bond Villain Yaphet Kotto Says a Black Bond Would Be ‘Silly’

COLORLINES: Yaphet Kotto, the actor famous for his role as the first black James Bond villain in “Live and Let Die,” says that there is no way 007 should ever be black. In a recent interview with The Big Issue, Kotto explains why:

James Bond cannot be black. Political correctness be damned, we have to stay with what is literally correct.

This is a very interesting read, especially coming from a black man. I don't agree with the fact that James Bond couldn't be black. First of all, Bond was created in the 1950's, a very different time than the one we live in now. I mean this was pre-civil rights. Second of all, the Bond franchise is a very unusual one, seeing as there have been 6 different men that have played the the title character. Every time the actor playing Bond has switched over the years, the audience hasn't sat there in the theatre and gone "wait a second, this isn't the right guy...what happened to the other one?" No. It begins as a fresh set of stories for this new Bond to embark on. This would be exactly the same if the new Bond was black. It would be irrelevant that all previous Bonds were white. This would be the new Bond and it would be a new set of stories.
