11 Great Film Markets Outside of NYC and L.A.

Backstage: It’s no secret that rising costs, tax incentives, and the growth of new media have been moving film and television productions out of Hollywood and New York. As the work expands to other regions across the continent, so do opportunities for actors in these small (but powerful) markets. Not feeling the “big pond” of New York or Los Angeles? Here are 11 other cities where you can make your on-camera dreams come true.

Most of these locations I was not entirely surprised to see on the list, however there were some I was surprised by and there were some I was surprised were not on the list at all. First, Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, or San Francisco did not surprise me, mainly because of their size and national recognition. I was somewhat surprised by Austin, Charlotte, New Orleans, and Portland. While yes these are all “credible” cities, they are not huge, but something I noticed in common with the cities, is that they all have a distinct character. I was very surprised not to see Pittsburgh on this list because of all the major movies and new upcoming television shows being filmed here. But something that was intriguing was the number of cities than have plans in place to attract filmmakers to their cities including tax breaks and a dedicated film scene willing to help support the film or television show, including extras.

As someone who is interested in possibly working in the film/TV world this article is particularly interesting. I like New York City, but I’m not sure if I could live there just because it is so busy and there are a ton of distractions everywhere you look. I have never been to Los Angles, but I am hoping to spend my summer there (so I will repost back about that then). However, by just reading this article I learned of eleven new fantastic cities that I could imagine myself living in, and also be able to work in the industry in. The four most surprising cities on the list were Albuquerque, Austin, Charlotte, and Portland. Reading their blurbs it totally makes sense why these would be popular film/TV locations; I would have just never guessed them. This article makes me very excited about the film/TV industry because it really allows you travel around and see the world.
