Variety: From “Dawson’s Creek” to “Forrest Gump,” South Carolina has seen its share of filming. The state lures productions with aggressive incentives, an experienced crew base, mild climate and the antebellum architecture of Charleston.
A while ago, I was surprised when a call went out for CMU students to be extras in a professional film. This piqued my interest - Pittsburgh didn't really seem like a city that would draw films that weren't explicitly set in Pittsburgh. I was really wrong. Not only is the city passable as New York, but it offers production companies competitive incentives. I guess South Carolina has also found relative success in this field as well.
With the expenses of films on a continuous upward trend, cities and regions offering incentives are really able to build up substantial niche economies around film productions. Over time, a truly symbiotic relationship has sprung up between these productions and the regions frequented by them. The film gets to cut costs, and reallocate funds elsewhere, while the region benefits from employment and supplying many of the resources a film production requires. As a skilled local crew develops, it only incentivizes productions to shoot in the area. This efficient, and mutually beneficial method of production is - at the end of the day - what makes filming sustainable.
