I think that the idea of the Tony Awards honoring theatrical educators is an amazing idea. However, I am very intrigued to see how it all turns out. The first thing that I see happening is the nominating committee get hundreds and thousands of applications for your everyday theatre teacher. Theatre teachers are very powerful impact on students across the board. However, what separates a good teacher from a teacher that deserves to win a Tony award? In my opinion, the kind of teacher is one that goes above and beyond to give their students the ability to learn about this art. My worry is that of all of those applications, the majority of them would be for teachers that (for lack of a better term) aren’t as deserving of the ward than others. I really hope that the nominating committee narrows it down to the most deserving teacher that has become very influential in their student’s lives wins the award.
I think this is a really awesome thing that the Tony Awards are doing. Theatre teachers are so often one of the most impactful teacher a student will have, and I agree with Jason about the worry of figuring out what teacher really deserves the Excellence in Theatre Education Award. I also think it would be extremely hard to choose even a couple teachers because every teacher is tied to just their one school so how do you judge a teacher from Florida against one from Illinois, for example. And who would even do the judging for that example when only the students from that school know. Maybe they could give the awards by state or something smaller than the whole country.
But either way, this is a really great award that will help raise awareness for the amazing theatre teachers and the students they have impacted.
