Review: A fun stroll down 'Avenue Q' with Pitt student production
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: It’s a kick to see “Avenue Q” every so often and be reminded of the wicked little show that toppled “Wicked” for the best musical Tony in 2003. Attending the show performed by college students and accompanied by a recent college graduate only enhances the experience.

I think student productions of Avenue Q are very interesting. To the average viewer, it seems like it would be a pretty straightforward show to produce. However, there is a lot of work that goes into the puppetry of it. First of all, you have to create puppets that look and move right. The puppets are the center of this show, and if they don't work right, the production won't go well. I would be interested to know whether these puppets were made by the props department, or somehow bought or rented from somewhere. Next, the actors have to be trained on how to use the puppets. This can also take time. Even shows that don't look that complicated can have a lot that go into them.
I've always wanted to see Avenue Q, and from what it sounds like it seems that Pitt has created a good production that maintains what made the original so good. The article didn't mention when the Pitt show was running, but if it is still on next week I may try to get tickets and go to see it. I hope that CMU will do some more puppet theater in the future.
