Portland Center Stage review: 'Venus in Fur' flips the script on sexual power dynamics

OregonLive.com: “We’re looking for somebody a little different,” says Thomas, a writer/director, anxious to end an audition by an actress who seems to exemplify the undesirable qualities he’s been seeing all day. But he finds out soon enough just how different this late-arriving actress, Vanda, really is, as reading and role playing turn into a tense, erotically charged game.

For some reason, the description of this play reminds me strongly of "Curtains," another lighthearted, witty, humorous musical with a slightly darker undertone as the characters (who are actors themselves) try to discover a murderer in their midst. Both plays involve a surface that is fun and captures the laughter of playful mood of the audience, yet also underscores this with something more serious to drive the plot along. with what sounds to be a bit of a mysterious and not quite explanatory ending, "Venus in Fur" is an intriguing play that could send many interesting messages.

Im curious as to how the play might advertise towards older audiences. I think the show sounds very interesting and i would love to see it. Im sure it will bring in a very youthful and fun audience. As said above i am glad there is something more there to drive the plot along because "sex" and "erotics" only bring the audiences in but it doesn't necessarily keep them there.
