For Your Consideration – The Lavish World of Costume Design
Below the Line: Costume design is so much more than simply stitching together clothing. It is a visual endeavor to breathe life and identity into a character and to contribute to the overall texture and tone of a film. It is a demanding task to develop fully faceted characters that are expressed through external appearances. For the 85th annual Academy Awards, the films in the running to win the best achievement in costume Oscar are all period films, where the costumes also serve to highlight a time and a place.

Although much of the time people say a show deserves to win best costumes because they are beautiful something about that just seems principally wrong. I have always felt that costume design was more about capturing the character and how they wished for themselves to be portrayed. In addition to going along with the rules of the world around (Whether it is the fashion of the time or the seeming of time in fantasy). So to pick a show just on beauty I think is an injustice to the business.
I totally agree with this article on how "Costume design is a visual endeavor to breathe life and identity into a character and to contribute to the overall texture and tone of a film." I definitely believe that costume is what determines the mood of the surroundings and identity of the characters because depends on clothes, setting can be changed and character's impression will be varied. Especially for me, since I am taking costume for this mini, I realized how every stitch makes different feelings to the fabric that is later connected into clothes. Looking at the achievements of those famous costume designers, I am very impressed because I saw most of films mentioned in this articles. Looking at this article, I realized how hard the task of costume design is in terms of portraying the character. What determines the identity of the character is combination of the actor's acting and costume design.
