Boston makes a play to become a tryout for plays. Again.

The Producer's Perspective: Boston used to be one of THE tryout cities (along with New Haven and Philly) for big Broadway musicals. Shows like Funny Girl and Anything Goes all tapped their toes on a Boston stage first, before shuffling off to Broadway second. That trend slowed down in the last couple decades of the 20th century (except for the fictitious Bombshell on “Smash”). Why?

This is a pretty interesting article. Right now, I'm taking Principles of Economics, and some of the issues we have talked about in class come up in this article. For starters, when there is higher demand, prices will go up. As the author of this article stated, since there are cheaper and perhaps even better or more convenient options, consumers are more likely to switch to the later option. It's interesting that Boston is trying so desperately to win back consumers, however their efforts seem futile. This whole situation seems to be very similar to how Pittsburgh has become really popular recently within film production. Pittsburgh is certainly a cheaper place to produce a film than places like LA and New York. It is also probably more convenient. I wonder if more of a severe shift will take place in Pittsburgh in the coming years.

I'm from Boston. It is incredibly expensive. The gas is expensive, the living is expensive, the sales tax is expensive, the food is expensive, the used cars are expensive. I barely realized how expensive for a long time, having lived in the area for the first 18 years of my life, until I moved to Pittsburgh. I pay half the rent on my apartment that I would probably be paying for a similar space in a similar location in Boston. My gas has always been under $4/gal at GetGo, and at Stop&Shop (the MA gas station of choice), it usually wasn't. So, it's really not surprising to me that holding auditions for things here isn't economical. It's a beautiful place. It's clean; there's a lot of history. But if you're just looking for someone to fill a role, you might as well do it somewhere cheaper.
