New York City Ballet Makes Arty Move For Millennials

Co.Create: Creativity \ Culture \ Commerce: The New York City Ballet is speculating that, much like Billy Elliot, most young city-dwellers would love ballet if they just gave it a chance. In order to entice these folks to make that initial jeté into ballet, the NYCB is starting an annual collaboration with some contemporary artists, the fruits of which will be on display all around the city.

This makes me so excited to see the collaboration of different art forms. As a former ballet dancer, I see ballet as simply another type of theater and another way of telling a story, as much as any play or piece of music or painting. The fact that NYCB is collaborating with visual artists to draw in audiences is a smart move. We need to think of ourselves not only as actors but as artists, and collaboration with and appreciation of other forms of art is imperative to becoming well-rounded, informed, and inspired actors.

This makes me so happy. Ballet is by far my favorite style of dance and I wish I had the ability to take classes when I was younger. However, I wasn't really aware of it all too much and I feel like if I had seen art pieces like the ones being displayed around I would've found it more interesting and intriguing. This is a great way to help artists get discovered while also allowing more people to be open to dance especially ballet since it seems to be very demanding and intense. Being able to showcase these artists and dancers while also giving people work while also attracting people to your business is such a great way to get customers and help out the community in general. Art with a purpose.

Mentioning Billy Elliot brings up an interesting question that occurred to me as I watched the musical. After the immense popularity of the Tony winning musical, was there in impact on the enrollment of students in ballet classes across the country and in England?

It's encouraging that arts programs are continuing to reach out to young students - ballet being a profession that generally looks to extremely young students beginning as soon as possible.
