Although two of the bids for musical went to West End productions "Singin' in the Rain" and "Sweeney Todd," the only other nom in the commercial sector went to thesp Charles Edwards for his perf in the title role of short-lived stage version of Oscar magnet "The King's Speech."

I guess we just cannot stop a organization going from the top of the wave to the bottom. there is always being a wave in the feild of theater. but let's see it in another way, the "going down" of troditional firm and production is exactly a chance for the new flash blood. that is how musical theater goes forward. and this is how everything goes forward. but as i say, it's wave. nothing will really go away. west end maybe performed bad this year, but it doesn't mean it will not come back. after all, no one could forget their les mis and other producitons they did that are more than great. i guess this is how they do. old mama goes into wave, children get in during the mama is weak, and then they get into their own wave and becomes another mama in one day in the future.

This article highlights one of my favorite things about UK theatre, the non-commercial theatres gain just as much if not more attention than the commercial theatres. Here, yes, off-broadway and off-off-broadway have a few theatre companies that slightly ring a bell, but we rarely see these shows dominating the Tony nominations. In this instance, we see a dozen or so theatre companies that aren't commercial and three commercial nominations. I'm personally a bigger fan of theatre that isn't commercial because the quality of the acting is usually a little higher and the shows that can be done aren't as limited by what will attract the largest crowd, aka, some experimental/modern theatre can be performed. I'm glad that the nomination board saw the potential in theatre companies that aren't shelling out glitz to sacrifice artistic quality.
