Puzo Estate Asks Judge to Take Away Paramount's Rights to More 'Godfather' Films

Hollywood Reporter: A deal between Paramount Pictures and the estate of author Mario Puzo in May to allow a new Godfather book to come out hasn’t thawed their icy relationship. On Thursday, the two sides were back in court as Paramount looks to stave off a loss of one of movie history’s most iconic franchises. The Puzo estate is going forward with counterclaims attempting to take back rights granted to Paramount. If successful, the estate will be able to deny Paramount the ability to make anymore Godfather films.

These movies are some of the best movies ever made and the fact that the estate wants to make another one is a travesty. People in Hollywood need to stop trying to resurrect dead franchises because every single new remake of classic movies made in the last decade have been awful. I normally would root for the underdog in this scenario but I am hoping that Paramount wins this case because I do not want to see the Godfather series desecrated. It is also amazing to me that there is still so much money in a franchise that had its last film 22 years ago.

My first thought is that I wish people would get over themselves, and just work together, but since I know that that will never happen, Ill work on getting over that. I agree that these are truly some fantastic movies. However, my question would lie in the fact that, are they planning on making another Godfather anytime soon? Or are they just worried about losing the option to make another movie? It just seems kind of silly, even if there was another book, I am of the opinion that the movies just wouldnt be the same with different actors. It would be like making Scarface without Al Pacino. Or how in the rest of the movies surrounding Silence of the lambs film, they tried to pass Julianne Moore off as Jodi Foster. It just bothers me. I also feel like Paramount could (and they do) produce a multitude of other movies, so it just seems like a matter of pride rather than necessity.

It's sad the way our society works today, everyone is out to make a buck... I can kind of see where Paramount is coming from in this, protecting the face of a franchise and all and referencing the latest written agreement to back it up. And I respect the fact that they eventually made a deal to allow a new book to be published. I'm all for extending the history and story of the Corleone Family, however as Luke said a new film would be awful. It's too bad the Puzo estate can't accept the deal that was made years ago with a simple contract and a handshake and instead feels the need to exploit Paramount and possibly destroy this classic work.
