I never really knew that animators were represented this way. One good thing is to know that the individuals that put their heart into their work and being covered and protected. Health benefits are absolutely wonderful! Wage increases are also great, but hopefully the wage increases means that the industry is growing, not that we just need more money. From what I can tell, it doesnt sound like it was too horrible of a time to negotiate. Maybe they didnt get what they wanted in the first place, but going back to the drawing board and then finding a conclusion was probably a momentous time for them!

I also was unaware about animators being represented through guilds. If I am understanding correctly, IATSE local 839 was the organization who helped the animators raise their wages and ensure more health benefits. I was under the impression that IATSE was a technical theatre organization only, and so to know that they are in partnership with a branch of the film industry is intriguing. I can't wait to see how else these two branches of the entertainment industry work together. In agreement with AJ, it is also great to see signs of our craft growing.

I, similarly, did not realize that animators were covered by IATSE either. The number of people covered under this contract, about 2500, seems like it would only be a small portion of the animation industry. I may be wrong, but I would be curious to see what parts of animation and how covered by IATSE they are. It's also very interesting to me that they are working on organizing visual effects artists, which is a very prevalent role in the film industry. I'd say with these types of positions, IATSE may be veering away from technician and more towards the direction that USA (which is part of IATSE) has taken. It will be interesting to follow.
