HowlRound: It’s a memorable day in a woman’s life when she gets called bitch to her face and not just behind her back. Two years ago at age fifty, I had the remarkable experience of being called a bitch at work by a twenty-three year old girl. Had it happened at my previous job as Associate Artistic Director of the Mark Taper Forum, where I was second in command of the creative staff of a multi-million dollar theater, I would have called Human Resources and had her fired on the spot. But at that particular moment I was an unpaid intern at a network television show and the twenty-three-year-old in question was my boss; so I went back to re-filling the laser printer and sucked up the indignity of being a middle-aged female trying to break into Hollywood as a writer.
