Broadway League Releases Results of 2010-2011 Broadway’s Economic Contribution report

Stage Directions: The Broadway League has released the results of its latest biennial study of the economic impact of Broadway theatre upon New York City. Their study measures the amount of money Broadway productions generate for the NYC economy in three different areas: direct spending on production, spending by theatre owners to maintain and renovate spaces, and ancillary spending by “Broadway Tourists.” The numbers below from the League are not hard numbers. As they say in the release below “money that was directly spent in these areas was then re-spent in multiple subsequent rounds” and the Broadway League is calculating the total impact of these subsequent rounds when they determined the final number Broadway contributed was $11.2 billion.
