Master Carpenter/Assistant Technical Director


The Studio Theatre, in the heart of the revitalized 14th Street Corridor, is Washington's premier theatre for contemporary theatre, with an unparalleled reputation for superb artistry.  Studio is seeking an experienced Master Carpenter/Assistant Technical Director to join the team of this 35-year-old not-for-profit organization.

The Master Carpenter/Assistant Technical Director will be part of a 4-person Scene Shop who are responsible for building scenery on premises for 11 projects per season in 4 intimate, state-of-the-art venues.

Primary Responsibilities:
Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

·         Help devise and execute scenic construction.
·         Oversee shop staff, over hire, interns and volunteers. 
·         Instruct Carpentry Apprentice. 
·         Maintain scene shop equipment and theatre spaces.
·         Track shop stock and inventory.
·         Assist in load –in, installation and strike of the Theatre’s productions.
·         Assist in the design and installation of mechanical scenic devices, special effects, and rigging of scenic elements in a manner that is safe and consistent with industry standards. 

The Master Carpenter/Assistant Technical Director reports directly to the Technical Director, in conjunction with the Associate Producing Artistic Director and Production Manager.

Preferred Qualifications:
·         Strong knowledge of scenic construction techniques and carpentry skills, including rigging, MIG welding, and mechanics/automation.
·         Must be able work both independently and as part of a coordinated team.
·         Ability to interpret and construct scenery from both CAD and hand drafted scenic designs.
·         Knowledge of CAD software (AutoCAD or VectorWorks). 
·         Strong judgment and management skills to prioritize multiple tasks while paying attention to detail.
·         Ability to work under deadlines in a fast paced environment.
·         A passionate commitment to theater and the mission and programming of the Studio Theatre
