io9.com: Devotees of arbitrary style guidelines, rejoice! According to the Modern Language Association, there is now a designated format for citing a tweet in an academic paper

I can't quite tell if this is a joke article or not. I'm going to go with "not", for the purpose of this comment.
I suppose it's a positive thing that academic paper rules are adapting to our changing technology. I can't shake the thought that this seems a little ridiculous, though. First of all, why tweets? Is there a way to correctly site Facebook statuses? Tumblr posts? Secondly, how do you verify this? Professors at CMU have lost their jobs or tenure because something they cited in a published paper couldn't be verified. People can delete tweets. Or delete their Twitter account. What if you can't find the original source in 5 years?
Ok, I just got the the end of the article, and thought it WAS a joke, but then I googled "citing tweets" and found out that the MLA manual does have tweets included.
