I was very surprised to hear that something like this hasn't been done before. Arts education in K-12 schools seems to range from excellent to nonexistent, and has for years, though now may be the worst it has been. Studies time and time again have proved the importance and benefits of arts education in schools, but this study begins to look at how those arts are taught, and what works. This is the logical next step because to implement an excellent art program (such as the new musical theatre initiative being piloted in some middle schools), because it will show us what art programs currently in existence are good. We can base our new work off them, we can help improve the less-than good arts educational systems that already exist, and make the most informed choice possible armed with a real understanding of how it works.
