Pittsburgh ready for animated closeup

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Major movie studios are cashing in with increasingly popular digital animated movies. And Michael Kadrie believes Pittsburgh's zoetifex Studios LLC can join those Hollywood heavy hitters as he works to establish an animation production studio here. "We're not going to be a little boutique animation studio," said Kadrie, who founded zoetifex and works as art director for a Strip District advertising agency. "We want to compete with Pixar and Dreamworks."

These are some big dreams for a starting animation company, but I do appreciate them. If you don't have large aspirations, what is there to work towards?Plus, it will be cool to have an animation studio in Pittsburgh, There is currently nothing like this, and it will be cool to watch it grow and develop. Maybe they will even team up with CMU and other universities for projects and internships, creating more opportunities for students in the area. I really see only positive things coming from the creation of this company.

This article brought up the decentralisation of the film industry that has been happening as digital technology has been brought to the forefront. If you can reasonably do the work from anywhere why would you rent space in high price areas like southern California when the cost of living and the cost of land is so drastically smaller here. These guys have a much lower overhead which will make them more nimble. With that said they will need a big break to rival the technology and scope of what Pixar has. Good luck to them.
