Ever Wondered Why: We Don’t Say “Mac–” DON’T SAY IT!

BroadwaySpotted: Today we’re going to talk about one of the most common theatre superstitions: Macbeth. The word, the play, you name it, theatre people find it creepy and even cursed! Many people believe that because the show is cursed you must refer to it as “The Scottish Play” instead of by it’s name when in a theatre, some people take it as far as to never say the name “Macbeth” unless it’s in a quote.
But why?

Do people actually freak out about this? Does anyone at Carnegie Mellon actually freak out about this? My take on it is that it can be fun, but it's not serious. Do people actually believe that a production is going to be "cursed"? Like actually, physically, doomed because of some specifically arranged syllables that came out of their mouth. I'm going to assume (hope that) no, it's not seriously serious.
