Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Martin Sheen headline West Coast premiere of marriage-rights play
The Washington Post: Martin Sheen commanded the stage with his impassioned portrayal of an attorney arguing for gay-marriage rights; Jane Lynch inspired instant response as a vehement same-sex marriage opponent; Brad Pitt dazzled as a judge. It was all part of the star-studded West Coast premiere of “8,” a play about the 2010 federal court fight against Proposition 8, the gay-marriage ban that California voters approved in 2008.

This was a brilliant event to watch, and it really shows what the internet can do these days in terms of advocacy, spreading the word, getting the message out. The play itself was sharp and smart. Though it mostly took directly from the transcripts of the proposition 8 trials (which, while still under lock and key, I was able to familiarize myself with by following the trials themselves on twitter), it also included commentary and scenes based on interviews with the two couples bringing the suit and their families. The cast were all excellent, and again it was great to see such high-profile actors as Brad Pitt and George Clooney taking part in something like this. I am looking forward to seeing where this play goes in the future, and watching the case as it makes its way to the supreme court.
I wish I had known about this! A staged reading of this material with such a star-studded cast is bound to gather attention, and the fact that it's being broadcast on the web allowing so many more people to partake in the audience experience of seeing the show with its original cast is brilliant. It's also great material to give to colleges and community theaters to do in other states than just California, because the issue affects so many people from so many different places. I can't wait to see the movie!
