With the tremendous sucess that the Shrek movie franchise had, it is no surprise that it was turned into a Broadway musical. I'm happy to see that it was well recieved and tastefully crafted. It seems that nowadays it is very easy to take a movie and turn it into a play and completely wreck the entire thing. I'm glad to see that the creators geared the entire thing towards little kids, because after all, you have to think about the children.
Not to bring up Spiderman again but I believe this show this show succeeds where it fails. In the music and the story. Sure it has some great technical elements, like the dragon but the focus, that appeals to children and adults alike, is the message that people are the same no matter what you look like, and that you shouldn't try to change who you are. It is classic fairy tale with a modern twist. That is entertaining on all counts it has, great dance, catchy songs, and it's funny. Everything is about telling the story not how cool they can make the effects.
