More on #SupplyDemand from The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra
Art Works: "I thought it would be interesting to write here about the efforts we have made at The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra (SPCO) to increase demand for our classical music concerts. NEA Chairman Landesman was quoted as saying that “demand is not going to increase.” At the SPCO we just don’t believe that. The music we perform has endured hundreds of years and is part of a vibrant living tradition. We are passionate advocates for our art form, and for the meaning it brings to people’s lives. Music matters!

I think that what Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra is doing is what every arts organization needs to do, and I think it's great that they're letting everyone know what works. The most interesting - and counter-intuitive - step they have taken is to lower their ticket prices. While many companies would see this as a sure step to financial ruin, it has actually managed to bring in many more patrons than ever before. Sometimes you have to give up some profit in one sector to make a much bigger gain in another.
