I remember when this conversation came up around the Legally Blonde broadcast on MTV. My high school choir was planning a NYC trip and was trying to decide what shows to see, and when the Legally Blonde broadcast was announced, I was sure that we'd end up seeing something different (since everyone would still get top see the show, just on TV). The opposite occurred. When voting came up, nearly everyone who saw the MTV broadcast voted to see the show live, since they loved the show when they saw it on television. These broadcasts have the potential to build a serious fanbase, and as my experience shows, won't necessarily kill the live show's ticket sales.
I do agree with Brian that these broadcasts will increase the general interest of the respective shows, and also provide people with convenient alternate to spending hundreds of dollars on planning a NYC trip to see the shows. I, for one, am excited since I don't have the opportunity to go visit New York often and when I am in New York, I'd like to see something worthwhile as opposed to shows that have been described as rather generic and passable. So this broadcast will provide me to see if they might be worth experiencing live in New York or on tour.
