Designer Lighting Joins Ranks of Wedding Planning

NYTimes.com: "New technology, not to mention one-upmanship among wedding planners and their clients, has multiplied the possibilities. Depending on how it is deployed, and by whom, it can also multiply the costs.
As recently as five years ago, said Preston Bailey, the Manhattan event designer, “I had to convince all of my clients of the importance of bringing in an outside lighting company.” Now, he said, many of the clients who can afford to hire him to create striking centerpieces and backdrops are also prepared to hire someone to illuminate those features.

It does not surprise me that people have created a 'fad' or have developed a sudden interest in theatrical lighting for their wedding. To me this article is kind of hum drum because in theatre all of these things are normal. And if some people want these huge extarvagant weddings, it doesnt seem like such a far stretch to getting a bunch of moving lights, creating an 'atmosphere'. Only proving my point is that the couple used as an expamle that were in theatre, did no such thing and spent only 100 dollars on lights. I think that if people want to go all out for their wedding that is totally fine and their perogrative. However, I think that the big lights and logos and shifts are really just whats popular because someone started it and theyll stick around until the next big thing. But for those of us in theatre it will just be something that is apart of our work.
