NYTimes.com: "For those who dismiss musicals as the theatrical equivalent of cheerleading, the Bay Area arts scene is demanding that they be taken seriously.
The new musical “Scalpel!” at the Brava! Center for the Arts has a gender-bending cast dressed in candy-colored women’s business suits, singing about the joys of liposuction against a backdrop of free-floating body parts. The combination of bunraku puppetry techniques and drag performance makes for an unlikely and unforgettable experience." via ArtsJournal

I am glad to see that there are still new musicals born in those locals places. And I know that well made and beautiful musicals are not only on Broadway. There are even shows with a low quality of story, but just entertaining (or annoyingly showy) lighting, projection and sound effects.
As a musical lover, I am very interested in creating a new musical purely for the purpose of storytelling the beautiful story. If new musical can be created in such an environment as the area discussed in this article, that would be totally ideal. In reality, the musicals with beautiful orchestra music like “Light in the Piazza” were created locally and made their way to Broadway. Maybe Pittsburgh will also become one of the cities, which can give birth to creative new musicals with this culturally rich environment and plenty of resources from colleges around the cities.
It seems like local musicals are really booming in the news on the Green Page lately. It's great to see this type of work surface and done to a caliber that is truly commendable. I'm not a huge fan of musicals, but I think that they are a viable art form and they are often not taken seriously. Bringing elements like Bunraku are also really exciting to see because it broadens the horizons for what's expected, especially in areas where local theater may not be as adventurous.
