Broadway Shows Raising Funds For BC/EFA in Unique Ways

Playbill.com: A benefit for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, the annual Easter Bonnet Competition — scheduled for April 26 and 27 at the Minskoff Theatre — ends a six-week period of intensive fundraising by the assorted Broadway and Off-Broadway shows. Curtain speeches, autographed posters and program sales, auctions and cabaret performances are all part of the fundraising effort, which brings in hundreds of thousands of dollars.

This article neglects to mention some of the most unique BC/EFA fundraisers, like the Flea Market (shows sell props and merchandise in a communal flea market atmosphere), the Broadway Bears (each cast designs a teddy bear themed to the show, signs it, and auctions is off with proceeds going to BC/EFA) and the event that invariably gets the most press of everything BC/EFA does, the annual striptease show Broadway Bares. Many regional and educational theatres also fundraise for BC/EFA - I chaired my high school company's 24 Hour Theatre Project, which gave ticket sales and donations to Broadway Cares. The Easter Bonnet is certainly a fun event, but BC/EFA does many more interesting and strange events.

I love reading about the way theatre can lend itself to fundraising. I like the idea of using a broken prop to sell to audience members (even if we know the real value is zero, at least it's a personal momento and not an impersonal t-shirt). Fund raising is a pain, but they seem to make it a little more fun.
