Brits flock to the West End for entertainment

Yahoo! News: If all the world's a stage, then it never has been more true than in the British capital right now. The nation's economy is in dire straits, but that hasn't stopped theatergoers from flocking to the West End, where attendance last year topped 14 million and box office revenue hit a record 500 million pounds ($775 million).

It's great that West End is still thriving amid the current economic climate, especially seeing how some shows have fared on Broadway. It's good that theatre is able to stay alive while audiences are suffering from financial difficulties. It shows that theatre still has something to offer if audiences are continuing to choose to spend their money on live theatrical entertainment.

It's always amazing to read about booms in attendance when the economy is down. They mention though that they combatted that by having stars in the shows to up attendance. It seems that the caliber of the shows has shot up as well, and the audience is becoming more interested. They're also very well-known pieces, which I think is common when the economy isn't so great so that you can rope in more people.
