Design for Stage and Screen in New Zealand
Scenography – The Theatre Design Website: "The Bachelor or Design for stage and screen at Toi Whakaari is the only course of its kind in New Zealand. It is one of the School’s newest courses and graduates of the Design course have already gone on to be Chapman Trip Theatre Award winners for set and costume design, worked on major movies and created opening ceremonies for Bloomberg and Deutche Bank."

After reading this article, I found a blog about Top Notch which was a reality tv series that followed students in the intense drama department in the Toi Whakaari school, featuring their extremely competitive auditions to their even more arduous first year in school. The students who came from all different backgrounds and walks of life (while one was a sunday school teacher, two were children of famous actors, a former lawyer and electrician) are emotionally, physically put to the test in such a competitive atmosphere. It really sounds like an amazing program and I'm not surprised that its produced so many famous actors and designers.
Its exciting to see that there are such intense programs for theater designers all over the world, even in New Zealand. As someone who wants to study abroad, looking at all the various options in so many countries can be overwhelming, but always exciting.
Even though its a relatively small country, it seems like the talent available is not any less than here in the US. In fact, with the rate of success, one wonders if it is just the program, or in fact if in a different culture where perhaps the arts are more supported, applicants are already better than those in the US.
What I find really fantastic is the involvement across all their programs with both the school of dance as well as filmmaking. That is one thing I wish CMU offered more of. I feel like in our last two years things can get really pigeon toed and it's really up to the individual to reach out to other areas.
