Post Gazette: "The Rage of the Stage Players' scheduled performances of 'Dorothy in Oz' have been canceled because of the closing of the show's South Side venue, the Brew House."
I thought that the residents of the Brew house had worked out a deal with the city that they would fix up the building to meet building code regulations. I heard they were just about to install a fire sprinkler system. I suppose the city must have decided that it was taking too long. Considering that people started living there because it was abandoned, I wonder what the city will do with the building now that it is abandoned once again.
I had no idea that someone had adapted Wizard of Oz into a new modern show, well besides Wicked. I would have loved to have seen this production if it weren't shut down. How sad that the theatre is being closed due to inspection problems. Hopefully they will find a new venue to perform there show, I would really love to see it!
I am very upset to hear that this very interesting space has been closed down! I was under the same impression as Ariel. Brian gave a report on the theater in class just a week ago! According to him they have been there for decades and were fixing the building up. It is always sad when a theater closes but this one was especially important. Not only did they put on less conventional shows then other venues but they also housed many of the artist who preformed there. Hopefully they will be able to regain the space quickly and find a fast replacement for their show. I'm sure a lot of work has already gone in to it and it would be a shame if they did not see any return on their investment. Not to mention I wanted to see the show!
As stated above from Ariel and Molly, I am particularly sad to hear that this space has been closed. I feel that this space has provided a center for artistic freedom for not only theater but art forms for all the disaplines. I agree with Molly in the sense that I hope the people are able to regain the space and maintain it as a positive art example in the community.
This is too bad; I would have loved to see such an interesting modern adaptation in an interesting venue. I hope that they find a new venue shortly so that everyone involved in the production can still play a part; however, I also hope they are able to find a venue that has as much character--not just putting on a stage downtown. Oftentimes when things like this happen, I've seen producers just find the easiest venue to get as soon as possible, without considering the artistic appeal of the space too. Hope we can see this!
