Woodstock heads to Broadway

Variety: "One of the men behind Woodstock aims to bring a tuner about the 1969 music fest to Broadway some time next season.
Producer Michael Lang -- an originator of the landmark event -- said he intends the show's score to be drawn from tunes of the era as well as include new songs by creatives who performed at the original fest."

To capture the true vibe and atmosphere that Woodstock achieved seems quite impossible. However, the people who have the best chance of actually reproducing that feeling are involved, the original producers. This is a very ambitious project. Luckily it is not one of those stories that should never be turned into a musical, it was originally all about music. I would be very interested in seeing it and I hope it is a success riding Hair's coattails.

I feel like this is a ripe off of Hair. Not only do they mention how the sucess of hair has influenced the idea and given Lang the go ahead for the project. Theater can be influenced but shouldn't rip off of another peice of work. It should stand alone.

It is going to be a very ambitious project and I wish it the best, I just hope it is done for the right reasons, as opposed to a money maker.

For a show like this, I'm guessing the music portion of the production will be the most successful aspect of the show, and everything else will just seem pointless. This will be a huge thing to accomplish and make truly original for an audience that has recently seen the popularity of Hair and the new movie Taking Woodstock, and are most likely ready for something different.

It seems like everyone is really skeptical of this article/show. And I am too, but I also think there is a chance this could work really well. I'm really interested to see how they take a concert and make it into a show. What story will they add? Who will be the main characters? Will the concert be the focus, or just the setting? I'd love to hear more about this as the details come out. I think with the right creative team, this show could be a marvel, or a complete disaster. I mean, look at Across the Universe, or Love. Both are shows based on the music of the Beatles, but both were done very, very well.

I think this is a really interesting concept. The best thing I read in the article is the possibility of including new music from performers at Woodstock. I think that idea could really set this apart from all other related things. The disappointing thing is that it will probably be rushed in some sense, considering the 40th anniversary of Woodstock was a few weeks ago, and this venture will probably want to go along with the timing of that event, before people forget about it.

This sounds to me like good news, perhaps even what theatre ought to be about. It's a new show, not adapted from a movie, and telling a story about something that a whole lot of folks didn't experience. i certainly can't know if it will be any good, but I am excited that there will be another (hopefully genuine) representation of the event that many of us are still in awe of.

There seem to have been a lot of woodstock-age entertainment lately. On the surface, a woodstock based show on broadway seems like a good idea, but I don't know how long the appeal would last. Woodstock is a tricky subject to approach because the original is so high in people's minds that the public may not appreciate another attempt to re-create it.
