Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark to Open at the Hilton in 2010

Playbill News: "Directed by The Lion King's Julie Taymor, the musical will officially open Feb. 18, 2010. Casting will be revealed shortly. (Evan Rachel Wood, who can be seen in the film 'The Wrestler,' previously announced that she'll star in the musical, but no official casting has been announced.)"

While I am slightly concerned about the direction Broadway is headed with the announcement of this musical, I am interested to see this collaboration come to fruition. Initially I was excited about Taymor and U2 working together, but with the announcement of the creative team, I am looking forward to it even more. It is split with Broadway vet's and newcomers. This, in combination with Taymor's history with each member should prove to be very interesting when Spiderman takes the stage in January.

I personally am an advocate of any new piece anywhere. While we all have concerns about the end of Broadway and the demise of the modern musical, I think shows like this are an admission of the fact that while ideas may be limited, we are treading the water we're in and making do with what we have. I think the back story sounds interesting enough to pull and audience, and isn't that the bottom line?

I'm a hesitant proponent of commercialism in Broadway when it has a creative team as amazing as the one working on Spider-Man. I hope that comic books and other untapped mediums can become intelligent inspiration for theater. There are only so many movies-turned-musicals that one can sit through. Producers are always eager for a piece with large appeal, so maybe they should start choosing their adaptations with a little more finesse.
