Pittsburgh 250 Festival of Lights

Rusty Bridge: "As part of Pittsburgh’s 250 adversity the Festival of Lights will be returning to brightly illuminate Downtown. The festival has become a unique part of Pittsburgh, and has become the largest of its kind in the world."

Last year I went to light up night downtown. I'm not sure if this is the same thing but it was when the storefronts and citizens of downtown welcomed in the season with snowflakey displays and deep fried oreos, and even an ice skating rink. To me the most impressive part of the whole thing was the oreos (worth the heart attack). It was just like New York in the way that everyone crowded in front of what you wanted to see and blocked your view, but unlike NY in that the art wasn't tall enough to be seen over the heads of the crowd.

I can't wait to head downtown this weekend to soak in the lights -- I'm also really intrigued about going to Cathedral tomorrow night -- that's when the switch gets thrown for the light show there. I think this timely festival of lights and theater is fantastic.

As a design student who would like to specialize in lighting, I'm obviously interested in all aspects of lighting design, specifically though architectural. I think this is a great opportunity for design students to see the work of international artists in a medium they might not be used to.
