Fire Extinguishers: X Sting Wish Fire Extinguisher Turns Firefighting Into a Shoot Out

Gizmodo: "When everyday devices become autonomous and start mating in the far future thanks to nanotechnology, items like fire extinguishers will become what designer Adam Scott has envisioned with the X Sting Wish. Mixing one part Dustbuster, one part machine gun, and a final part carbon fiber-wrapped fire extinguisher, Scott has managed to cook up a device that looks as at home in a kitchen as it would in Gears of War made real."

"people are more apt to reach for their shotguns than that red cylinder marked "FIRE EXTINGUISHER."
Its interesting to propose the idea that changing a fire extinguisher to look like more of a weapon to give it more urgency in the mind of its user. It makes sense that we would react to a dangerous situation with a "dangerous" or strong object.

Want one. Now they need to make a sniper model, a machine gun model, and bazooka model for all your fire fighting needs. Oh what a day that would be with a few dozen of these and a cardboard dumpster. Joy.

Hrm. Totally looks like the rocket launcher from Quake. I call rip off. If i replaced my baby fire extinguisher in my car, would i have to worry about it being mistaken as a weapon?

I've always thought the instructions on fire extinguishers were pretty self-explanatory: point at fire and pull trigger. However, I can see how they might not be the most ergonomic of devices, have to hold up the weight of the canister by the little lever. Maybe this new extinguisher really does make putting out fires easier. But it also looks really cool.

Alright, since the article made the reference first, this thing looks exactly like a red and black version of the sniper rifle from Gears of War, and that scares me (if you want to know what this means go to http://i209.photobucket.com/albums/bb66/GEARSOFWARONLINE/gears-of-war-20060725102049319.jpg). My first reaction looking at this thing was "I really want to shoot this thing..." and that we before I really knew what it was. I'm just picturing classes full of kids looking at this thing and not being able to resist shooting each other.

The shape of the fire extinguisher will cause some confusion. I think of rocket launchers and machine guns when I see it. Young children particularly little boys might be attracted to the comic book design turning this into one big hazard. I would like to see how other people react to it if they are not told what it is with labeling.

wow! A fire extinguisher that looks like a gun...every little boy's dream! What is the world coming to? It's not like there is not already enough violence in this world. Besides the fact that it alludes to violent practices, the design does not look safe or truly easy to use in the stress and "heat" of the moment!

The symbolism of a weapon is obviously the crucial point here. However, I find it odd that people do not look upon a fire extinguisher as an object of safety. Perhaps the real solution is to have better education about fire safety? I don't think promoting the idea of weapons = safety is a healthy one.

Recognizable? Definitely, but i think only if you already new what it was.
If on of those was on the wall of a public building, people might not realize what it is in a fight or flight situation.

Yeah, I agree with pretty much all of the sarcasm and love that the slogan includes easily recognizable. I think its probably pretty safe to say that a fire extinguisher is probably the most recognizable thing that puts out fires. If you didn't know about this "thing" and had to find a fire extinguisher in an emergency, would you grab for this thing or just keep going, afraid you might shoot someone.

This thing looks more like a flame thrower than a fire extinguisher. If it’s not broke to fix it. People know what a fire extinguisher is supposed to look like. If something was on fire and I saw that thing on the wall I would not think to use it. Why do we have to make fire fighting like using a gun.

Does anyone else find it strange that we, in America, equate safety to guns? I think that we need to maintain an image of safety with fire extinguishers remaining in their normal shape so as to promote a safe environment for anyone who may be in need of assistance in the event of a fire.
