The Dreaded "F1" Key

Lynn Allen's Blog: "About three years ago I wrote a post on changin the dreaded F1 key to something other than 'help' for obvious reasons. Last year I recorded an updated version of the same concept...changing the F1 key to anything other than Help (preferably to Escape since that's what you were trying to hit anyway). By far I get more comments about this than anything else!"

I have witnessed people actually remove the F1 key from the keyboard in order to avoid the inevitable escaping of your finger when trying to hit ESC. I've also known people to re-program CAD to disable that key from bringing up the help menu. It's crazy how something that's trying to HELP YOU can be so annoying.

Help menus are generally badly constructed with horrible search functions. I think software developers know that no one uses them so they don't devote time to developing them so the product ships with a useless help menu and thus no one uses them. There's a lot of things left over in out OSs and UIs from previous iterations of technology that are generally just useless to a contemporary user. Alas, conventions are a powerful thing to try to overcome. :3 Very useful video, unfortunately I'm not comfortable enough with CAD yet to try and fiddle with anything that might hinder me in the long run.
