The more I hear about this the more upset I get at how bad this could be. I've been avidly following the rush of comic films that have been coming out because I grew up reading them but I can't be sure about this being at all good or having any kind of substance, sadly.
A source said: "She doesn't care what it costs. Does not care at all. Her attitude is, it's for the art, and you don't question artists."
Ahhahaha.
Anyway, Spiderman is totally sweet and all, but I highly doubt that this musical is going to do the original comic any justice. I just can't imagine a song about webslinging..
this article was very interesting to read after the "10 ways for theaters to survive" article. one of their points was that theatre should be done often and dirty and cheap. in the spiderman article is says most of the money was alotted for design, which in many ways is so cool and excites me, but at the same time it sounds like a waste. Shows can use lots of money and an expensive design can enhance a show, but in this case i am guessing the design will be expensive and superfluous.
"The show would have to run successfully for 8,000 years to break even."
I had to read this twice to make sure I read it right. My thoughts are as follows: "Seriously?!"
When this much money is thrown away on a project like this it ceases being art and becomes pure spectacle. Ridiculous.
A show that has a $35-$40 million budget mostly for design and Bono doing the score? It's utterly ridiculous but I think anyone who goes to see it will probably come out surprised about what a good time they had. Sure it will probably have a pretty thin plot, and it will mostly be just a big splash of design all over a stage, but I think a visual oggle-fest can still be entertaining.
Wow, I'm so happy all this money that could be helping the world is being used for Spiderman the Musical. Wasn't there already a movie that preached these same ideals? Why are we putting it into theatrical form? What could be gained? Yes, theatre needs to be supported, but I feel that this kind of money should be used to create something new rather than retell a movie.
i just have to say i loved this article and this production. i guess julie taymor attitude toward explains the production team's attitude. i can't believe their break even point is close to infinity. i guess... you can do whatever you want to do with your money in a very artistically productive way...?
This show sounds like a money pit. A money pit for some inflated egos.
