Technical minds meet fine art instincts

Las Vegas Sun: "Someone has to figure out the technological trickery that creates the sort of staggering stage magic for which Vegas is famous. And UNLV is taking the lead, inaugurating a multidisciplinary program merging engineering technical expertise with the creative instincts of the fine arts — with the priceless advantage of access to the largest laboratory in the world, the Las Vegas Strip."

I really think that we need to do more things like this. I love coming up with crazy ideas and finding ways to accomplish it. Anymore today the TD has to be able to handle things like Phantom, and other LV shows. That and special effects are just plain fun to work on.

A counterpoint to this is that this field is so specified to projects and it would be difficult to do just a little bit of this type of work.

Las Vegas is deinately a tech playground with almost unlimited funds and possibilities. I think we do need a little more experience on what it is like to run/work for a show that is heavier on the spectical to understand what new challenges is brings to the table.

entertainment engineering? oh, yeah, that's still hush hush here...

"The classroom is a literal junkyard, cluttered with sharp edges and messy"

sounds a lot like PTM to me. a major like this is a bit easier when you're in the middle of vegas and companies like Fisher and Foy are just around the corner, offering insight and grabbing at students every chance they get. luckily, Tait is beginning to do the same with us... they changed their website, its kinda scary

Vegas is an interesting place. the amount of money that flows through there makes it possible to finance these ridiculous projects. Because everything in vegas is about spectacle, companies are willing to dish out the money necessary to blow the audiences mind. and these companies are willing to provide the resources needed.

I think that a job such as a TD in the entainment industry has to have a very creative mind. Even though most people just think that TD's of a technical mind they have to be able to look at a problem and find a way to do it no matter how impossible the project is. This is even more so in Las Vegas where the designs are out of this world.
