Conductor does double duty as tenor loses voice
Post Gazette: "That would be amazing enough, except that Antony Walker, the Pittsburgh Opera's music director, didn't leave the podium. In a rare occurrence indeed in the opera world, Mr. Walker conducted and sang the role of Radames in the final act of the opera while the tenor acted the role on stage."

What a creative solution to a potentially disastrous problem. I would never have guessed that you could even ask the conductor to sing a role. I found it interesting to learn that the conductor sings for the orchestra in rehearsals. I wonder if many conductors do this or not. Are they all this prepared? For some reason I just never imagine the orchestra happening seperately from the singing, but I guess it actually works that way. I'm also very impressed by the ability of the singers on stage to work with the conductor's singing with such little notice.
...can he do that? dont they normally have understudies ready incase something like this happens? somehow i think this would be against the contract of the conductor, but i guess if he wanted to, then there's no stopping him.
