CMU unleashes its first mascot

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: "Carnegie Mellon University has dubbed its mascot 'Scotty' and given this Scottish terrier the task of making a school known for hard work a little more fun."

Interesting...I don't understand the colors/mascot of our school. I thought our color was maroon however a lot of places on campus have red, blue, green and yellow on them. If the scotty is our mascot how does that have to do with maroon or the other group of colors? It's also surprising that since the start of this school just now has it gotten a mascot. Maybe next year they can resolve the color dispute.

I think it would be better if we had a huge tartan walking around instead. I guess you know you don't go to a big state school when you have to have a new mascot wear your actual mascot. Football games should be rather interesting as comical from now on. Who though it was a good idea to have a blanket as a mascot in the first place? We are and old school, I am sure there were plenty of animals left for us to have....like a viper, or a coyote perhaps

i don't understand why we "voted" a scotty dog as a new mascot when it was already a mascot. I mean, even before I came here i knew that the scotty dog wore the actual tartan of our school. i guess they had to make it 'official' or whatever, but really i think that anyone who decided that a piece of cloth was going to make a good mascot had obviously never been to a football game. bad planning on their part i suppose.

I actually think that the school colors are that of the Tarten. Which is red, blue, green, and yellow. I don't think our school has one specific color or even two like other schools, but instead it is the color of Scottish Tarten. I believe that it probably is Carnegie's family tarten and colors. I'm not really sure though just what I have heard. I think that its a little sad we don't know these kind of things about our school.

I personally think the tartan is a cooler mascot because it is more about us and our school, and because lets face it, having a good mascot for our football team is not CMU's number one priority and I would rather our school be original than convenient for football games.
Then again my high school didn't have sports teams or a mascot so maybe I'm not the person to ask.

It's not "Scottish" tartan. It's the Carnegie's tartan. Each family has their own.

I hope they don't change the name of the football team. Go Tartans, go is like the most awesomely pathetic cheer ever.

The school needed a mascot of some sorts, but I think that the school might be taking this unveiling a little too far. No one really cares too much, CMU. A cute little dog isn't gonna change the fact that CMU has very little school spirit.

I think that it is important for Carnegie Mellon to identify itself with some sort of mascot, however i think staying the tartans, but adding a scotty dog, is like admitting we don't even know what we are. The tartan colors are applicable, but in a lot of ways it is like being the rainbow school, then we have that maroon, and another kind of red as well. CMU is stuck between tradition, and normality in mascot identity. All things considered, I think we have arrived at a good middle ground with a scotty dog that has a kilt bringing the traditional tartan into the scheme.

I may be alone in this, but I don't think that CMU's mascot (or lack there of) really matters much. I was there on Thursday when the "new" scotty dog costume was unveiled, and to be honest it wasn't that exciting. Tartan or no Tartan, the mascot isn't something that is going to have a huge effect on the lives of students, so why not spend this time talking about something that actually matters? (Like the upcoming ban on smoking.)

I'm curious to know whether or not the new mascot is an attempt to get people to go to the football games. I do not think anyone can be naive enough to think that a new mascot will get people to start going to the games. At the same time, though, I cannot think of any other reason for people to make a big deal about a mascot, something that doesn't affect our lives in any way. I'd be curious to know just how many articles on the blog this year were about the new mascot; I think its pretty high.

I'm pretty sure Kelli and Rebecca right on this one. In other news, Scotty is the worst name ever. What were they thinking?

I'm pretty sure that optimus prime was the winning name, but we'll never know for sure. campus officials just will never accept that as the true vote of the student body.

you're not allowed to vote for him in the student govt. elections either now... at least until someone changes their name on file...
