Must Watch: Smart People Trailer

FirstShowing.net: "Smart People is going to be the new hit indie comedy, at least I hope. I saw this surprisingly impressive comedy-drama at Sundance, and it's made it very high on my list as one of the best movies of the fest. The story is about a literature professor from Carnegie Mellon University named Lawrence Wetherhold, played by Dennis Quaid, who gets involved in a relationship (with Sarah Jessica Parker) and is dealing with his perfectionist daughter (Ellen Page) and jobless brother (Thomas Haden Church)."

Just becasue Dennis Quaid and Sarah Jessika Parker (whose careers are going downhill) are in this movie does not make an "indie" movie. Just becasue Ellen Page is in this movie does not make an "indie" either. Smart People is currently set to arrive in theaters from Miramax on April 11th. Also, Juno and Little Miss Sunshine the last two "indie hits" are not indie. They were distributed by 20th century fox.
Now that I have that off of my chest this movie is not going to be a hit, people will see it since Ellen Page the new "indie star" is in it however I highly doubt this will get as much acclaim as juno. So far there are four reviews of this 2 are positive and 2 are negative. But it is interesting that this is based on a CMU professor.

Yay! Cannot wait for this movie, mostly to see Coop on the big screen. Anyway, it'll be interesting to see what this movie has to offer because in a lot of ways I feel like I've heard this story before. . .

Unlike Bart, the indie purist, I couldn't care less if this is a true 'indie' film or not. The plot looks fun, I like the actors (even if they are going downhill), and I like being able to point at the screen and know where the film was shot. I am excited to see it.

This movie was one of the huge hits at Sundance, at least based on Entertainment Weekly's summary of the film festival. I'm curious to see the movie, because it does have a fairly solid cast. I disagree with Bart that people would see this movie because Ellen Page has become a new "Indie darling", and I don't think people were only raving about Juno because of her performance (which, still, was quite good). Granted, she's an extremely talented actress (see Hard Candy), and it cannot hurt, but her role will not make the decision whether or not the movie will be a hit. I don't think this movie will be called an "indy" film, but it is a "Sundance" film. It's hard to say how successful it will be (I honestly don't expect much, whether it ends up being good or not). And you can't say that SJP's career is going downhill just yet. We'll have to see how the Sex and the City movie does first.

I'm kind of excited to see this movie when it comes out. It was cool to see how they were filming this on campus and the whole crazy process. Talking to Dennis Quaid and Thomas Hayden Church was a great way to see how awesome they really are as people and how they came to be where they are.

I agree that this is not an indie film and that people shouldn't label things indie because it sounds trendy.

i know that place! but i think it'll be distracting to me to watch the movie

i agree with everything you just said: it's not indide, i don't care what you say. there was quite a massive production crew involved, several famous actors, and it's being produced by miramax. it may not be mainstream, but as i've come to know the meaning of the word "indie", it's not that either

to defend myself, the "indie purist" movies that make 87 million can not be called indie. According to IMDB.com Juno has made 87 million so far and little miss sunshine 59 million. These are not indie films, and indie films do not have big name actors like dennis quaid, thomas haden church, and sarah jessika parker. Also becasue a movie premiers at sundance does not make an indie or a "sundance movie" it is a movie. Also it's pretty safe to say boh of these actors are going downhill.
