Playwrights Look at War Then and Now

NY Daily News :: Entertainment: "War may be hell, but it often makes for good theater. The recent New York openings of two very different plays about two very different wars have given theatergoers an opportunity to examine how playwrights artfully deal with the subject, not only on the battlefield but on the home front as well."

It's true the war is a great source for the stories, especially for the theaters'. Right after the 9/11 attack, Clinton, in his speech, said that the New Yorkers should be more uplifted at times like this... Let us show we are unbeatable... blabla... New Yorkers should go watch the Producers, go out to dinner. There's definitely a link between the theaters and the wars. The definite similarity is that the audience, or the public feels exactly the same or more-so threatened by the enemies without actually being in the war. It's all about creating the environment so that the audience can feel the suspence. That's what the photojournalists do with the war photos.

it is a shame that so much "good" art comes from such a terrible thing as war. but they are all right, war and the pain it causes both physically and mentally make for some great theatre and art all around. i think the important message that all these productions are getting at though is that war is not necessary and it should never be the answer. however many productions dazzle the audience or remind the audience that in fact it is just a show, and therefore obliterates any meaning they may have established.
